Patrick for Sight's Seeing is Believing

The statistics on blindness are staggering. But people do not go blind by the million, they go blind one by one, and for each person the impact is enormous. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination, depriving many people in the developing world of basic human rights. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood. The figures appear overwhelming, yet providing help is simple.

Bangkok 10K - Judy & I completed in reasonable times (~58min and ~49min respectively).

Surprised to find I came 5th (in the Bank’s team) after our Kenyan friends Henry & Joe (2nd & 3rd). Apparently, Judy actually came first in our Bank’s women team!

Singapore - Half Marathon.  Didn't do nearly as well, both of us suffered from cramps; but did managed to limp home in 2:18 (Judy) and 1:59(Patrick).  Delighted to have taken part, even more so to see donation passing $33,000.

Hard training for the full marathon in HK starts now!

Friends & Colleagues,

I ran in the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) HK marathon in ‘08 to raise funds for my old school. What really inspired me were the Bank’s massive and sustained efforts to address blindness on a global scale.  The figures alone tell a story:

  • Every 5 seconds, one more person goes blind.
  • Every minute, one more child goes blind
  • There are 45 million blind people in the world
  • 80% of blindness can be avoided - it can be prevented, treated and even cured.
  • USD30 pays for a simple eye operation that can cure blindness from cataracts, the world's leading cause of avoidable blindness.

“ Since 2003, through the SCB Seeing is Believing initiative, over USD17m has been raised, reaching 5m people, contributing to over 2m sight restorations

Eight months later, I joined SCB and my wife Judy and I moved to Singapore.  “ We are taking part in the SCB marathon events in Bangkok (Nov 22nd), Singapore (Dec 6th) and then Hong Kong (Feb 28th).  I shall attempt a 10km, a half marathon and a full marathon respectively.  Judy shall attempt a 10km, and 2 half marathons”

We want to dedicate the runs to “Seeing is Believing” and we look to you for sponsorship and support. Standard Chartered will match our efforts dollar for dollar.

We welcome donations of any size, straight, performance linked or exotic structures, and most importantly your encouragement. Please send us your specific challenges and help us to beat the minimum target by a very, very long way.

Judy & I have kicked off the fund raising with $1000 each.  Pease pile in your donations to make that a rounding error.  Of course, we shall report back on our progress on the runs and fund raising.

Many thanks in advance,

Patrick and Judy
