Vision Centres bring vital eye care to India’s poor
Blindness affects 15 million in India – and 80% of it is avoidable.
About the project
Quality, primary eye care is coming to the heart of India’s poor communities thanks to our project to bring ten Vision Centres into the heart of the community in Rajasthan.
With our partners Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospitals, the project will save the sight of thousands of people in the region’s Alwar District. In these rural hinterlands, many people live too far from hospitals and often cannot afford the treatment they need to protect their sight.
India has an estimated 15 million blind – up to 80% is avoidable blindness, that could be prevented by surgery or prescription spectacles Alwar district has 14 administrative blocks, and each has up to 125,000 people.
Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital already has a secondary satellite hospital in Alwar. The Vision Centres, when operational, will link to the hospital. Locations will be chosen to spread help as widely as possible to the maximum people in need.
By the end of the project, we will have provided:
- Primary eye care – early identification of eye conditions, refraction, and dispensing spectacles
- Referrals for further treatment
- Training for local health workers
- Integration with local resources to deliver quality eye care
- Primary eye care at lower costs
- 24/7 availability to people in need.
