Eye care for neglected hill communities
There are 37,000 blind people in Nepal, of which 25,000 could be treated.
About the project
Nepal is one of the poorest counties in the world. Over half of all avoidable blindness in Nepal is due to cataract, glaucoma and preventable or treatable corneal and retinal diseases.
The communities in Eastern Nepal's hill districts are mostly unaware that many eye problems can be treated. Those that are, often remain without treatment as they struggle to afford or even access medical services.
There is a great need for Private Eye Care Centres and quailfied doctors to assist with the back log of eye problems in remote areas of the Eastern Region.
We’re working with the Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS), a national preventative programme aiming to reduce the prevalence of blindness and to expand eye services to the visually impaired in Eastern Nepal. NNJS have key ties with eye hospitals, centres and almost all eye care related programmes in Nepal.
By 2010, we aim to:
- Create awareness for 790 people
- Examine 120 adults in screening camps
- Examine 38 students and children
- Train 518 new eye doctors.
