EVENT: 4 Deserts Gobi March
EVENT DATE: 3/6/2006

Rob is an executive consultant with Connect Communication Limited in Hong Kong. Connect is a specialist communications consultancy providing training, advice and coaching in all areas of spoken and written communication.

2006 GOBI MARCH

The final stage of the 2006 Gobi March came to a close on Saturday, 3rd June. Rob completed the 6 stages of the race in a total time of 28 hours 48 mins, finishing in 3rd place overall in what was his first expedition length ultra-marathon.

This years race wound it's way through spectacular salt flats, undulating hills, Uygur villages, mountain passes, desert canyons and sand dunes - probably the most varied terrain in the history of the event. The race started and finished at around 5,000ft, but reached the snow-line at nearly 9,000ft on day three. Temperatures ranged from 35 degrees C during the day and dropped to 0 outside the tents at night.

Rob extends a big thank you to everyone at CONNECT for their generous support,to Adrian Baker at NEW BALANCE for all the footwear and apparel and to family and friends who provided encouragement, useful (and not so useful!) advice and generous sponsorship. Finally Tim McCosker ensured Rob recovered fully from a torn calf in February and had 14 weeks of injury free training….

RUNNING FOR CHARITY

The aim is to continue to raise funds for the two charities post event. The two charities are:

Seeing is Believing
Every 5 seconds, someone goes blind. There are 37 million blind people in the world, 75% is avoidable or treatable. Seeing is Believing aims to raise US$6 million to restore sight to 1 million people. Just over 50% has been raised so far.

Room To Read
World change starts with educated children. Since 2000, this charity has sought to make a difference in the lives of children in Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. In only 5 years, 197 schools have been built, 2,565 libraries established and 1,757 long-term educational scholarships for girls established. www.roomtoread.org

Rob's background: After graduating with a degree in Sport and Physical Education in 1988 Rob trained as an officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Wales, he then served in the UK, Hong Kong and Northern Ireland before a final tour with the Gurkhas in Hong Kong. He left the forces’ in 1996, just before the handover and joined IMG, the world’s largest sports marketing and event Management Company. As Director of Events, Rob was responsible for the implementation of over 50 televised events. These included numerous professional golf tournaments, football exhibition matches and adventure races throughout Asia. Rob left IMG after eight years and returned to training, joining Connect in early 2005.

Please continue to forward this e-mail to friends and donate on-line if you haven't done so already to help restore someone's eye-sight or give them a chance of an education.

A BIG THANK YOU to those who have contributed - please forward to your friends!
